What the CAT MCQ fee covers
The A$2,920 authorisation covers one exam event, which you schedule within 12 months of payment. Changing to another event is free before the closing date of the event you are booked in; after that date, a candidate who cannot sit forfeits the authorisation and the payment. The authorisation also gives 12 months of free access to the AMC's preparation app, which has 210 questions written by AMC contributors.
The AMC cancels an authorisation only in exceptional circumstances, with supporting evidence, and not because of visa issues or delays. A cancelled authorisation is refunded at 75% within one month of payment and 50% after that, before the authorisation ends. Not attending, or not meeting the authorisation rules, consumes it with no refund. The AMC will no longer add a card payment surcharge from 9.00am AEST on 1 October 2026.
The AMC's fees across the pathway
Calculated from the fees above, for a candidate with one qualification who passes each stage at the first attempt:
| Route | AMC fees |
|---|---|
| Portfolio and CAT MCQ | A$3,562 |
| Then the clinical examination in person | A$6,562 |
| Then the clinical examination online | A$6,962 |
| Then workplace based assessment | A$4,632 |
The CAT MCQ is the first of the two AMC assessments, and the eligibility guide sets out what has to be in place before you can pay for it.
Costs that are yours
- Verification. Primary source verification of your medical qualification is done through ECFMG's MyIntealth, and ECFMG charges for it separately, in US dollars. The AMC says verifying further documents adds costs from both the AMC and ECFMG.
- Getting to the test centre. The exam is sat at Pearson VUE centres in Australia and overseas, and the AMC does not cover travel or other costs of attending.
- Preparation. Courses, books and question banks are optional, and the AMC does not require or endorse any of them. This page quotes no provider's prices.
- Time off. Study leave and the exam day are a cost too if they mean lost earnings.
A second attempt
A second attempt needs a new authorisation at the fee current when you apply, A$2,920 today, and another exam event. You cannot lodge another application until you have the result of a scheduled exam, and results take three weeks. The exam dates page shows which windows a second attempt could still reach.
